Don't just meet your goals — surpass them by 10-20%. Track every win with metrics. "Increased conversion by 15%" beats "did a good job." Build a personal accomplishments doc and update it weekly so you have concrete proof when review time comes.

Make Your Manager's Life Easier

Promotions don't happen in a vacuum — your manager is your biggest advocate. Proactively solve problems before they escalate. Send weekly status updates. Anticipate what they need and deliver it before they ask. When your manager looks good, they fight harder for your promotion.

Operate at the Next Level Before the Title

Start doing the job you want, not just the one you have. If you want to be a manager, mentor junior team members now. If you're targeting a director role, start thinking strategically about department-level outcomes. Promotions reward proven capability, not potential.

Build Cross-Functional Visibility

Your direct team knowing you're great isn't enough. Volunteer for cross-team projects, present at all-hands meetings, and build relationships with leaders outside your department. Decision makers you've never worked with will be asked "do you know this person?" during promotion calibration.

Identify a skill your team needs but nobody has — AI/ML, data analytics, public speaking, technical architecture — and become the go-to expert. Being indispensable in a high-demand area makes you impossible to overlook. Companies promote people who create value that's hard to replace.

Know When to Move On

Sometimes the fastest path to a promotion is a new company. If you've been told "not this cycle" twice, or the company has a pattern of slow promotions, an external offer can either accelerate internal action or land you the title and raise elsewhere.
